Mainly it is a strip of
land lengthening towards the sea. The locals call it "the boot" for its
characteristic shape.
Because of its length the climate in Italy has all the gradation of
temperature that can be found between a north and a geographic south. And also
the character of the people changes from a region to another - the climate, is
known, has influence also on this.
It has many borders:
Austria, France, Slovenia, Switzerland and, just in the middle of the territory,
between the Marche and Emilia Romagna regions, arise the very small Saint Marino
Republic. Then, there is the Vatican - a state within a city, Rome.
To North, Italy is encircled by the Alps, a mountain chain that practically
determines its natural borders. And then till to the extreme South stretch the
Apennines mountains that, like a vertebral column, have contributed to separate
the right part of the Italians, on the Adriatic Sea, from those of the left
part, on the Tyrrhenian Sea - has maybe the politics in Italy taken cue from
the orographic configuration of the territory ?

Italy is a very rich land, especially down in the South - but the inhabitants do not have realized it yet. In Italy there are 7,600 kilometers of coasts... and a lot of sky still blue, a lot of sea still crystalline, many beaches, many mountain or hill huts and, above all, many magical hidden exclusive atmospheres. In order to discover them it must take risks themselves in the unknown (almost) and improvise themselves modern exploratory.
